Xerox scientists have invented a way to make hardcopy prints with images that last only a day, so that the paper can be used again and again. This technology blurs the line between paper documents and digital displays and could ultimately lead to a significant reduction in paper use resulting in environmental benefits. The Wall Street Journal described the technology as an innovation that "breaks with conventional processes and goes beyond marginal improvements in products and services."
Technology DescriptionThe erasable/reusable paper technology was a collaborative effort between the Xerox Research Centre of Canada (XRCC) and Palo Alto Research Center Inc. (PARC).
The technology includes a special polymer coated paper with the look and feel of regular paper which allows printed images to be retained for 16-24 hours. Alternatively, the images can be immediately erased by a light or heat source. The polymer coating has compounds that change color when exposed to a certain wavelength of light.
The technology also includes a special "printer" that uses a light bar as a writing source to activate the compounds in the coated paper to create images that gradually disappear.

BenefitsIn today’s office environment, many printed pages such as e-mails, web pages and reference materials are often printed for a single viewing and then discarded. Erasable/reusable paper enables significant savings by reducing energy consumption and waste disposal costs.

ApplicationsDespite our reliance on computers to share and process information, there is still a strong dependence on the printed page for reading and absorbing content. At the same time, we'd all like to use less paper. Self-erasing, reusable documents for short-term use fulfill both needs. This technology is a simpler, more energy efficient, and a cost effective alternative to current printing technologies for any application that requires printing of short lived documents.
